Spanish FM: we verify if Algeria complies with unblocking of banking operations

Spanish foreign affairs minister, Jose Manuel Albares, said on Thursday, that Spain’s government verifies “on the ground” if Algeria complies with the unblocking of banking operations.

According to Spanish media, Albares pointed out in a televised interview that Spain has recently learned of liberating banking operations between the two countries, adding that the government, however, verifies if Algeria has restored the full banking operation with Spain.

Albares stressed in the interview the necessity of good relations between Madrid and its neighbors, without adding further details about the nature of relations between Spain and Algeria now.

Algeria decided on June 8th to suspend the Cooperation and Friendship treaty with Spain after Madrid had announced its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Sahara through the autonomy plan.

Following this decision, the Algerian Professional Association of Banks and Financial Institutions announced the suspension of commerce and banking operations with Spain, but at the end of July, it announced the resumption of the operations.

A few days later, the Algerian presidency negated any resumption of commerce or banking relations with Spain, and it added that Algeria is still at the top of anger with Madrid.
