A new escalation has emerged between Morocco and Algeria due to the premises of the Algiers embassy in Rabat, as Morocco announced the intention to expropriate the Algerian premises in order to expand the headquarters of Morocco’s Foreign Affairs.
In the Official Gazette dated March 13, 2024, between pages 6619 and 6620, it was reported that the Ministry of Economy and Finance, in consultation with the Ministry of Interior, submitted a draft resolution to the Prime Minister regarding the expropriation of 6 properties to expand the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building and construct new administrative buildings.
According to the same source, the expansion works necessitate expropriating 6 properties, including 3 owned by the Algerian state, one of which is the Algerian embassy building.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry issued a statement, Sunday, expressing its protest against the project to expropriate properties belonging to its embassy in the capital Rabat, in order to expand the headquarters of the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, considering it contrary to "commitments established by international law and custom."
The Algerian Foreign Ministry used a threatening tone in the statement, stating that it would respond to such "provocations by all means it deems appropriate," resorting to legal means, especially within the framework of the United Nations.
