UN: Akhannouch Underlines Morocco's Commitment to Implementing Pact for the Future

Head of government, Aziz Akhannouch, underlined, Monday in New York, Morocco's commitment to implementing the Pact for the Future adopted by the United Nations, with a view to boosting the multilateral system in the service of peace and inclusive development.

"It is essential to place peace, stability and development at the heart of collective action, hence the need for a global and integrated approach, based on trust, dialogue and mutual respect," said Mr. Akhannouch during the Summit of the Future initiated by the UN Secretary-General.

In his speech in the presence of minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, the Head of Government recalled that this Summit, which is being held in a global context marked by complex challenges, offers an opportunity to renew the international community's adherence to the United Nations Charter and to reaffirm the collective commitment to reinvigorate the multilateral system.

"Renewed multilateral action requires a real political will to act collectively as well as inclusive solutions, based on equity and solidarity," he pointed out.

In this regard, he recalled King Mohammed VI's call for a reform of the institutions and frameworks of the multilateral system, on the occasion of the Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Marrakech, in order to take into account the changing socio-economic and political situation.

Africa must be at the heart of the priorities of the UN action in order to transform the challenges facing the continent into opportunities for development and prosperity, Mr. Akhannouch stressed.

Referring to the pressing issue of climate change, Mr. Akhannouch underlined that Morocco aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45,5% by 2030 and to increase investments in renewable energies, including green hydrogen, to raise the share of clean energies in the electricity mix to 52% by 2030.

The head of government also highlighted the progress undertaken by Morocco, particularly in terms of social protection and strengthening food and health sovereignty.

The Summit of the Future, which is part of the general debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, brought together heads of state and government, as well as representatives of international organizations and civil society, at the UN headquarters in New York.

On this occasion, the UN Member States adopted a Pact for the Future, which includes a commitment to reduce the digital divide and speed up the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
