Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Benin, Louis Gbéhounou Vlavonou, reaffirmed, here Tuesday, his country’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.

The Beninese official, who is on an official visit to Morocco at the head of a large parliamentary delegation, expressed this position in a meeting with Morocco’s Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, the Lower House said in a press release.

During this meeting, Vlavonou reiterated his country’s support for the Autonomy Initiative presented by Morocco, commending the progress and development momentum in the Kingdom, under the enlightened leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, the same source added.

He also stressed that Morocco is a model to follow in Africa, adding that his visit to the Kingdom aims to promote parliamentary cooperation between the two countries’ legislative institutions.

The Beninese official also highlighted the role of parliamentary diplomacy in reinforcing ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, underlining the importance of the parliamentary friendship group and the exchange of visits in boosting bilateral and multilateral coordination between the two legislative institutions.

For his part, Talbi Alami welcomed the visit of the Speaker of the Beninese National Assembly and his accompanying delegation, noting that it shall contribute to strengthening ties between the countries, mainly at the parliamentary level, in accordance with the memorandum of understanding signed between the two institutions in 2018.

He expressed the Lower House’s readiness to share its experience and expertise in parliamentary action and digitization with its Beninese counterpart.

On this occasion, Talbi Alami expressed his thanks for the positive and continuous position expressed by the Republic of Benin, in October, before the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, in which the country praised the autonomy plan presented by Morocco to resolve the artificial conflict on the Moroccan Sahara.

During this meeting, the Speaker of the House of Representatives informed his Benin's peer of HM King Mohammed VI’s Atlantic Initiative aiming to promote Sahel countries' access to the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Kingdom’s progress in several fields, such as renewables, seawater desalination and foreign investments.
