Morocco: Sebou Dams Gain 600 Million m³ of Water Following Recent Rainfall

Dams within the action zone of the Sebou Hydraulic Basin Agency (ABHS) have received nearly 600 million cubic meters (M3) of water following recent rainfall recorded in this area, director of the ABHS, Khalid El Ghomari, stated on Monday in Fez.

On the sidelines of the Agency’s Board of Directors meeting for the year 2024, chaired by Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, El Ghomari told the press that the filling rate of these dams stands at 44%, with reserves reaching nearly 2.7 billion cubic meters.

This figure represents 45% of the total reserves of all dams at the national level, he said, adding that the Al Wahda dam, an important water infrastructure in the region, has a significant filling rate of 50%, amounting to 1.6 billion cubic meters.

El Ghomari emphasized the efforts made by the ministry to improve water quality in the basin and combat all forms of pollution, noting that 1.3 million cubic meters of water are transferred daily from the Sebou basin to the Bouregreg basin to supply Rabat, Casablanca, and neighboring cities with drinking water.

The official also announced that five dams are currently under construction in the basin, with a total investment of MAD 10 billion. These include the M’dez dam, nearly completed in the province of Sefrou (700 million cubic meters), Koudiat Borna dam in Sidi Kacem (12 million cubic meters), Sidi Abbou dam (200 million cubic meters), and Ratba dam (1.9 billion cubic meters) in the province of Taounate, with respective completion rates of 87% and 33%, as well as the Ribat El Kheir dam in Sefrou (124 million cubic meters).
