Around 500 animals rescued from wildfires in Turkey

Around 500 animals have been rescued from the flames in Turkey, according to estimates.

Among them were rabbits, goats, cows, dogs and turtles, Ahmet Kemal Senpolat, the head of the animal protection organization Haytap, told dpa on Friday.

Turkish emergency crews continued to battle the worst fires seen in years for the 10th consecutive day.

A field camp was set up in each of the regions of Manavgat, Marmaris, Bodrum and Osmaniye. There, volunteers took care of the injured animals.

The organization calls on the population to bring them wounded animals, which will be treated free of charge.

The animals have burnt fur or paws, and some have breathing issues and are unable to stand up, Senpolat said.

It is still unclear how many animals died in the flames. It is estimated that at least 100,000 hectares of forest and fields have been burnt in the fires.
