A male politician in Algeria has been widely criticised for referring to female candidates running in the legislative election as "strawberries".
Aissa Belhadi, the Righteous Governance party leader, made the comments while dismissing the calibre of candidates in the 12 June poll.
He also referred to female candidates as "beauties".
The Righteous Governance is a small party and does not enjoy wide support.
Mr Belhadi's critics have called him a "clown" saying his comments insulted Algerian women. Others have called on him to withdraw from the poll.
"It is not acceptable to refer to female candidates as beauties," Asrar Setti, a female candidate from the Belhadi’s party said.
