The United Nations' Security Council called upon Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to "resume negotiations" over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) built on the Nile River. In a brief presidential statement, the Security Council urged the three countries to "take forward the AU-led negotiation process in a constructive and cooperative manner." These negotiations must lead to a "mutually acceptable and binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam within a reasonable time frame."
The Council's 15 members, who have unanimously approved the brief presidential statement, also urged the observers invited to take part of the negotiations to facilitate the resolution of this issue.
