European Official: EU Economy Back on Track

The EU's economy is getting back on track as it recovers from the novel coronavirus pandemic, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday.

"In 18 months from now, all 27 member states will be back on track, recovered from the crisis," she said via video conference at this year's Brussels Economic Forum.

Recovery was made possible by policy decisions, von der Leyen said, citing work done on vaccines and economic stimulus measures taken on the EU and national levels.

"Today, more than 60% of European adults received at least one shot, and 41% have received both shots," she said.

Stressing that the EU economy is projected to grow by 4.2% this year and 4.4% in 2022, she said the bloc supported almost 30 million workers through a €800 billion ($951 billion) fund.

The fund, called Next Generation EU, is the biggest recovery package in Europe since the Marshall Plan and will boost the economy by 2%, according to the European top official.

It also includes targets in communications, clean energy and digital transformation.
