German unemployment continues to fall

Unemployment in Germany fell to 2.317 million in November.

This means that 60,000 fewer people were without a job in November than in October, and 382,000 fewer than in November 2020, the Federal Employment Agency announced in Nuremberg on Tuesday.

The unemployment rate fell from 5.2 per cent in October to 5.1 per cent in November. The rate was 0.8 points lower than in November 2020.

The fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic has has had little impact on the labour market so far.

"The recovery of recent months has continued," said Detlef Scheele, chairman of the board of the Federal Employment Agency. "The consequences of the current worrying coronavirus situation in Germany are hardly apparent so far."

However, there has been some movement in short-time work, a government furlough scheme whereby workers are sent home by a company in financial distress, but do not lose their jobs, while the government pays a percentage of their salary.

Manufacturing has been hit by supply bottlenecks, and the agency also notes problems in the hospitality industry.

From November 1 to 24, notifications for short-time work were received for 104,000 people, an increase of about 10,000 on the previous month.
