57th Session of UN Human Rights Council Kicks Off under Moroccan Presidency

The 57th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) kicked off in Geneva on Monday, under the presidency of Morocco.

Chairing the inaugural session, Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva and current President of the HRC for 2024, introduced the session's agenda and reviewed a series of organizational and procedural issues, then declared the session open.

He also gave the floor to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, who delivered an update on his annual report on the state of human rights worldwide.

In his report, which will be the subject of a general debate on Tuesday and Wednesday, Mr. Türk gave an overview of the human rights situation worldwide before reviewing the human rights situation in several of the world's hotspots.

The packed agenda for this session, which runs until October 11, includes the review of no fewer than 80 reports on the human rights situation worldwide.
