African Lion 21 will be conducted in Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia in June, but the vast majority of the exercise - the largest such annual military exercise in Africa - will take place in Morocco, the U.S. embassy in Morocco confirmed to Assahifa English in a statement.
The embassy’s statement came as an answer to a question asked by Assahifa English about how true some of the news that says the U.S. Army Africa (also known as Southern European Task Force) will move the African Lion military exercise from Morocco to Tunisia.
In this regard, some local media in Morocco have said that the African Lion military training exercise would take place this year in Tunisia instead of Morocco. However, the U.S. embassy negated the news and promised to issue more details soon.
The African Lion is the biggest annual military exercise being conducted in Africa; it is spearheaded by the US Africa Command’s (Africom) and hosted by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, with the participation of different worldwide partners.
According to Africom, the annual exercise activities are designed to enhance interoperability among partner nations against adversarial networks intent on destabilizing the region.
As a reminder, the African Lion military exrcise in 2020 was reduced in scale due to COVID-19.
