Algeria summons its ambassador from Morocco over Hilal's statements

Algeria summoned, on Sunday, its ambassador from Morocco for consultations on the background of statements made by the permanent ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations, Omar Hilal.

According to a statement by the Algerian Foreign Ministry, it was decided to summon the Algerian ambassador from Morocco, after Rabat did not respond to Algeria's calls to clarify its position on Omar Hilal's statements regarding the issue of Kabyle.

The Moroccan ambassador to the United Nations had distributed a letter to the members of the Non-Aligned Movement demanding Algeria to grant the right of self-determination to the Kabyles, which sparked controversy in Algeria.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry said that "there is an urgent need for the Kingdom of Morocco to clarify its final position on the extremely dangerous situation resulting from the rejected statements of its ambassador in New York," adding that after recalling its ambassador, "it does not rule out taking other measures, according to the development of this case."

The letter of the Ambassador, the Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, Omar Hilal, has become the topic of the hour in the Algeria, as the government, parties and media agreed that the matter was “dangerous” and that secession was unacceptable, although Morocco’s move only two days passed, while Algeria has been supporting ‘Polisario’ separatists for half a century.

Hilal's statements on the issue of the Kabyle in Algeria led to some political parties calling for the Algerian army to respond forcefully to what it described as "Moroccan provocations" and "Moroccan hostility" to Algeria, while these parties, according to a number of observers, have forgotten that the Algerian support of The 'Polisario' has been for decades hoping that Polisario to obtain the independence of the Sahara from Moroccan territory.
