Bourita to Meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington in First Face-to-Face

The U.S. administration announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet on Tuesday with his Moroccan counterpart in Washington — marking the first in-person meeting between the two officials following a phone call held in late January.

According to Rubio’s daily schedule released by the spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, the Secretary of State is set to meet with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, at 2:00 PM Washington time.

The State Department did not disclose the reason for the meeting, which makes Bourita the first foreign minister from the Maghreb region to meet with Rubio. However, it is noteworthy that the official schedule contains no other meetings with foreign ministers or government officials for the day.

The new administration of President Donald Trump had its first official contact with the Moroccan government through a phone call held on March 27, 2025, between the two foreign ministers, Marco Rubio and Nasser Bourita.

According to a dispatch by Morocco’s official news agency, Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP), U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the "leadership role" of King Mohammed VI in promoting regional and international peace and security.
