CMA CGM, a global shipping giant, has announced strategic adjustments to its Asia–Northern Europe routes, FAL 1 and FAL 3, within the Ocean Alliance network, reinforcing the growing role of Tanger Med as the premier hub in the Western Mediterranean, replacing the Spanish port of Algeciras.
Exclusive information received by Assahifa English reveals that starting in January 2025, Tanger Med will serve as the primary transshipment hub for CMA CGM. The move capitalizes on the port’s strategic location and the company's significant investments in the Eurogate terminal, aimed at boosting operational efficiency and enhancing connectivity across key global markets.
According to exclusive details, the revised FAL 1 route will establish direct connections between Busan, South Korea, and Gdansk, Poland, strengthening the links between Asia and Northern Europe. The rotation will also include new stops at Dunkirk and Southampton, reflecting CMA CGM’s adaptation to changing trade patterns. The 14-week FAL 1 rotation will be inaugurated by the CMA CGM BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, a 17,859-TEU vessel, departing from Busan on January 5, 2025.
The FAL 3 service will extend to a 15-week rotation, incorporating Tanger Med on its eastbound leg. The updated route will include key ports such as Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Singapore, Le Havre, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, and Port Kelang. The rotation will begin with the CMA CGM RIVOLI, a 23,112-TEU ship, departing from Qingdao on December 30, 2024.
The exclusive information highlights the strategic significance of Tanger Med’s elevation as a pivotal hub in the Asia-Europe shipping corridor. By replacing Algeciras as the main hub for the Gibraltar Strait, Tanger Med is expected to handle increased transshipment volumes, further solidifying its role as a leading logistics center in the region.
These route changes underscore CMA CGM’s commitment to optimizing its global operations and supporting the flow of trade between Asia and Europe. The restructuring cements Tanger Med’s position as a key hub, advancing Morocco’s influence in the international maritime sector.
