France-Morocco Friendship Group in Senate Welcomes France’s Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over its Sahara

The France-Morocco interparliamentary group of friendship in the French Senate welcomed on Tuesday the decision of the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

In a press release published on the French Senate’s website, the France-Morocco friendship group, chaired by Senator Christian Cambon, welcomes this decision it has always advocated.

Quoted in the press release, Cambon said that “this decision reconciles France with its historic position in support of Morocco and its efforts for peace and development in this region,” noting that “it is high time that France added its name to the long list of countries who had already supported the autonomy proposal for the Sahara under Morocco’s sovereignty.”

The friendship group, whose delegations visited Dakhla and Laayoune on multiple occasions, recalled having “long since worked within the framework of parliamentary diplomacy to ensure that France unequivocally supports the Moroccan plan (...) in close collaboration with the Morocco-France friendship group of Morocco’s House of Councillors and its successive presidents.”

The President of the France-Morocco Friendship Group also called for “a new chapter to be opened in cooperation between Mediterranean countries, drawing in particular on the solid partnership forged between France and Morocco.”
