French Expert Says France's Backing of Morocco's Sovereignty Over Sahara Revitalizes Bilateral Relations

France's decision to support Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara region puts the relationship between the two countries back on track, according to geopolitics expert Emmanuel Dupuy.

"This is a positive evolution of France's long-awaited stance, which previously lacked sufficient clarity and coherence compared to Morocco's position," stated Emmanuel Dupuy, president of the Institute for Prospective and Security in Europe (IPSE), in an interview with MAP.

The French government has now aligned its policy with the hundreds of other countries that recognize Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, added Dupuy, who also teaches geopolitics at the Catholic University of Lille.

"By going further than it did in 2007, we should welcome the fact that the French position now joins the ranks of numerous other nations supporting Morocco's claim," he explained in this regard.

French President Emmanuel Macron formally presented this "new doctrine" of France's foreign policy regarding the Moroccan Sahara in a message to HM King Mohammed VI, highlighting the solemnity of this significant shift.

Dupuy believes that this move will encourage other European countries to join the growing international support for Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara.
