The International Symposium on Transitional Justice, organized under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER), came to a close in Rabat on Saturday.
On this occasion, Speaker of the House of Representatives Rachid Talbi Alami underlined that this event, held under High Royal Solicitude, brought together actors at the center of IER's work as well as international and Moroccan human rights bodies, legislators, the Executive Power and national civil society working in the field of human rights.
In this respect, he noted the importance of this kind of meeting in the current world, marked by the exacerbation of intolerance, inward-looking attitudes, tensions and sometimes national egoism, particularly concerning issues relating to the very essence of humanity and consciousness.
For his part, Speaker of the House of Councillors Mohamed Ould Errachid noted that the Royal Message addressed to Symposium participants reflects the strategic depth and singularity of the Moroccan experience in transitional justice, stating it is a clear call to move forward in immunizing achievements and enshrining the culture of human rights in national legislation and institutions.
With regard to the Moroccan experience in the field of transitional justice, Talbi Alami highlighted the profound legislative reform momentum the IER's recommendations have prompted in Morocco, as well as the impact of legislation adopted with these recommendations in mind, mainly in the implementation of the law, while immunizing the Kingdom's present and future.
For her part, President of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) Amina Bouayach noted that Morocco's experience with transitional justice confirmed Moroccan society's ability to achieve profound political, economic, social and cultural transformations.
The symposium was organized on the initiative of the Houses of Representatives and Councillors and the CNDH under the theme “Transitional justice processes: for sustainable reforms”.
Participants in the gathering, held on Friday at the Parliament's headquarters in Rabat, discussed issues relating to transitional justice processes, including possible interactions between the latter and constitutional, legislative and judicial reforms.
