The French daily newspaper Le Figaro praised the numerous advantages of train travel in Morocco, particularly highlighting the Tangier-Marrakech route, which was “tested and approved by the editorial team,” on Saturday.
In an article titled "From the Mediterranean to the Gates of the Desert: Why the Train is an Excellent Way to Cross Morocco," the French daily noted that "Moroccan rail transport has improved in terms of comfort and speed following the launch of Africa’s first high-speed train in 2018."
The article sheds light on the "ambitious development plan of the Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF)," taking readers on a journey across the kingdom's railway network, which "promises a bright future, especially with Morocco hosting the 2030 World Cup (in partnership with Spain and Portugal)." The plan aims to extend the high-speed train line to Marrakech and Agadir and connect 43 cities, compared to just 23 today, via traditional trains.
The journey described by the daily starts from Tangier, where "the spirit of an eternal artistic city full of inspiring places is explored," and continues to Marrakech, passing through Rabat, which impresses with its ancient walls, the 250-meter-high Mohammed VI Tower, and the Grand Theatre (designed by Zaha Hadid) with its futuristic designs, followed by Casablanca, where an architectural adventure awaits, and finally arriving at the Red City (Marrakech), where the famous station has been expanded to accommodate the significant increase in rail traffic.
Le Figaro also mentioned the tender launched by the ONCF in 2023 to purchase 168 self-propelled trains (expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2030) to replace the old trains on the Casablanca-Marrakech line, "which will help improve comfort in traditional trains with new services: power outlets, Wi-Fi, adequate storage spaces, facilities for people with special needs, among others."
In the "Monthly Train Journey" section, Le Figaro introduces its readers to this mode of slow travel, ranging from charming small lines to major high-speed rail networks across several countries.
