Moroccan Agricultural Exports to Spain Soar to €1 Billion

Morocco has strengthened its position as Spain’s leading supplier of agricultural products in terms of value in 2024, with total imports from the kingdom reaching 1 billion euros. This marks a 16% increase compared to 2023, according to data from the Spanish Customs and Special Taxes Department, analyzed by the Federation of Fruit, Vegetable, Flower, and Live Plant Exporters (FEPEX).

According to the same source, while France maintained its position as Spain’s largest supplier of agricultural products in terms of volume, Morocco outpaced it in value. Spain’s imports from France totaled 1.1 million tons in 2024, reflecting a 19% increase compared to the previous year. However, the total value of these imports reached only 523 million euros, representing a 16% growth from 2023.

The report attributed Morocco’s dominance in value to the diversity of its agricultural exports to Spain, compared to France, which primarily relies on potato exports. Notably, potatoes account for 86% of Spain’s total agricultural imports from France.

Regarding Spain’s imports of Moroccan agricultural products, total vegetable imports exceeded 291,000 tons, marking a 22% increase from 2023, with a corresponding value rise of 422 million euros compared to the previous year.

As for Spanish fruit imports from Morocco in 2024, they reached approximately 165,000 tons. Although this represented an 18% decline in volume compared to 2023, the value of these imports increased, reaching 619 million euros.

The Spanish media source highlighted that three Moroccan products dominated the country’s agricultural exports to Spain—peppers, green beans, and tomatoes—which together accounted for 77% of Spain’s total vegetable imports and 49% of overall agricultural imports from Morocco.

Beyond these key products, other Moroccan agricultural exports experienced significant growth, particularly cucumbers, with Spanish imports rising to 15,294 tons, a 39% increase, reaching a value of 18 million euros. Zucchini imports also grew by 15%, totaling 12,449 tons, valued at 12 million euros.

In the fruit category, several products recorded substantial growth, most notably avocados, whose imports by Spain soared to 35,449 tons—a 56% increase compared to 2023—bringing their total value to 97 million euros.

Despite France maintaining its role as a key supplier to the Spanish market in terms of volume, its heavy reliance on potatoes led to its decline in value rankings, allowing Morocco to take the lead. According to the Spanish report, France recorded a 19% increase in its agricultural exports to Spain, reaching 1.1 million tons in total. However, the overall value of these imports amounted to only 523 million euros.

With this strong performance, Morocco continues to solidify its position as a major supplier of agricultural products to the Spanish market, further strengthening its role as a key trade partner in Europe’s agricultural sector.
