Moroccan Royal Navy Commandos Free Crew of Liberian Cargo Ship Threatened by Migrants

Two Royal Navy units, carrying a special commando team, successfully freed the crew of a Liberian-flagged cargo ship on Monday as it sailed 110 kilometers off the coast of Tan-Tan, without any incident.

A statement from the General Command of the Royal Armed Forces reported that on November 4, 2024, an alert was received from the National Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Rabat. The alert indicated that the crew of a Liberian-flagged cargo ship, sailing 110 kilometers off the coast of Tan-Tan, had been threatened by irregular migration candidates who intended to divert the vessel towards the Canary Islands.

The same source explained that two Royal Navy units, carrying a special commando team, were immediately dispatched to the scene and managed to free the crew without any incident.

The 54 irregular migration candidates were transported to the port of Tan-Tan and subsequently handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie for the necessary administrative procedures.
