Moroccan Security Forces Counter Migrant Attempts to Reach Ceuta

Since the early hours of Sunday morning, the Tarajal area between Fnideq and the occupied city of Ceuta has been in a state of high alert due to clashes between Moroccan security forces and thousands of young people and minors seeking to storm Ceuta after arriving from various cities.

Sources at the scene told Assahifa that hundreds of individuals attempting to enter Ceuta gathered on the hills separating Fnideq and Ceuta. They made a collective attempt to reach the fence at the Tarajal crossing, but the Moroccan forces intervened and dispersed them at eleven o'clock in the morning.

The same sources added that the Moroccan security forces used tear gas to repel those trying to storm the borders of Ceuta. In response, some of the individuals attempting to breach the border threw stones at the security forces, creating a state of chaos and tension in the area.

Idriss Ouahabi, a Moroccan civil society activist residing in Ceuta, revealed that the Moroccan authorities and their Spanish counterparts had agreed to close the border crossing for specific periods to prevent it from being exploited as an entry point to Ceuta by the intruders, despite the extensive security cordon set up by the Moroccan forces near the Tarajal crossing.

According to the same source, the current situation around Ceuta is cause for concern, especially with the ongoing attempts to reach the city’s border fence. Dozens of young people and minors continue to change their points of entry, leading to ongoing and renewed confrontations.

The city of Fnideq and the surrounding areas have recently witnessed a significant security presence by various Moroccan security units, supported by rapid intervention and crowd dispersal teams. These forces have managed to prevent hundreds of individuals from reaching Fnideq and the vicinity of Ceuta. However, many of them have returned to the area through other routes away from the main roads.

Local sources in Fnideq indicated that those trying to storm Ceuta include young Moroccans and minors, as well as dozens of foreign migrants, particularly from Algeria and Sub-Saharan African countries. They form scattered groups and make attempts to breach the border collectively.

So far, no injuries have been reported among the security forces or those trying to storm the border. However, several sources at the scene confirmed to Assahifa that injuries are highly likely to occur on both sides, given the intensity of some of the clashes near the Tarajal crossing.
