Morocco and Spain agreed to gradually reopen the land borders in Ceuta and Melilla, starting tomorrow, May 17, 2022, after more than 2 years of closure due to Covid-19, and the diplomatic crisis between Rabat and Madrid.
The first phase that starts tomorrow will be only for European Union citizens and foreigners who hold a residence card or a visa of EU countries.
According to Moroccan and Spanish authorities, the resumption of the border crossing will be only for travelers not for merchandise, so people who will cross the borders will not be allowed to carry merchandise without submitting it to the customs, contrary to the previous situation which was before the closure in 2020.
The same sources have pointed out that the second phase which will start on May 31, will be for the Moroccan people who enter Ceuta or Melilla for work under legal job contracts, and those will have to obtain a special visa that allows them to enter one of the two cities.
After the second phase, the joint Spanish- Moroccan committee will meet to decide the other categories of people who can cross the land borders and under what conditions.
