Morocco Committed to Deepening Collaboration with IAEA to Strengthen Africa’s Fusion Energy Capacities

Morocco is firmly committed to deepening collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to strengthen Africa’s scientific capacities in fusion energy, said on Wednesday in Rome, Morocco’s Ambassador to Italy, Youssef Balla.

“The Kingdom of Morocco states its commitment to deepening collaboration with IAEA and international partners to strengthen Africa’s scientific capacities in fusion and related sciences,” stressed Balla before IAEA’s World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) Ministerial Meeting.

Morocco is also ready to support the IAEA’s activities to improve regional cooperation and the exchange of knowledge, particularly in Africa, he added, stressing that this initiative shall enable the Continent to become an integral part of the future of fusion energy.

The diplomat added that the Kingdom is achieving “notable” progress in education and research in plasma sciences, thus laying the foundations to explore this energy in the future.

He maintained that Morocco deems that the pacific usage of fusion energy could progress thanks to increased international efforts and with the active collaboration of member States, mainly through activities organized within the framework of the IAEA on the safety of fusion energy.

In this respect, the Kingdom is calling, through the IAEA's WFEG, to establish skills training, particularly for the benefit of developing countries, in order to strengthen the scientific foundations and capabilities that will ultimately enable the adoption of fusion technologies on a large scale, he said.

Although fusion energy research in Africa is still under development, the Continent has expertise in nuclear and plasma fields, with qualified professionals in various scientific disciplines, added Balla.

Welcoming Italy's initiative in hosting this Ministerial Meeting to “collectively take up the challenge of developing a safe, secure and decarbonized energy source,” he highlighted the IAEA's pioneering role in establishing a global framework for strengthening collaboration between all the stakeholders, with the aim of accelerating and supporting developments in fusion energy, destined to shape the future of clean, sustainable energy solutions.
