Morocco’s OCP Group has unveiled a significant strategic investment to boost its phosphate production capacity, through the establishment of two new mining and industrial hubs in the Marrakech region. The initiative will be led by the group's subsidiary, OCP Nutricrops.
According to a statement from the group, the project involves the creation of two new hubs—Mzinda and Meskala—which will integrate advanced technology and sustainability standards. These facilities are expected to gradually increase the group’s fertilizer production by 9 million tonnes by 2028, particularly Triple Superphosphate (TSP) and TSP+, with 4.5 million tonnes anticipated by 2026.
The statement explained that this initiative falls under the SP2M program, which aims to scale up OCP’s production capacity while enhancing its competitiveness and commitment to carbon neutrality by 2040.
The Mzinda and Meskala hubs are described as a new generation of industrial sites, incorporating Industry 5.0 technologies, artificial intelligence, and automated production processes.
Exclusively powered by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, and relying on unconventional water resources through desalination and wastewater treatment (STEP), the two complexes reflect OCP Nutricrops’ commitment to sustainable and efficient production. Their modular and expandable design allows them to adapt to market fluctuations and optimize the production chain, offering a flexible and tailored supply to farmers worldwide.
The statement added that the upcoming platforms are designed to meet rising global demand for sustainable fertilizers, aligning with OCP Nutricrops’ vision to reinforce its leadership in the customized fertilizer sector—especially TSP and TSP+—while embedding sustainability and operational efficiency at every stage of the production cycle.
Thanks to cutting-edge technology and operational expertise, the Mzinda and Meskala platforms are also expected to unlock new opportunities in mining, chemical, industrial, and logistics activities. Additionally, they will support OCP’s green energy transition strategy, which is a core component of its long-term transformation.
The SP2M program, the statement noted, serves as a foundation for growth and innovation, reinforcing OCP Nutricrops' commitment to tackling global agricultural challenges through effective and sustainable solutions.
Youssef El Bari, CEO of OCP Nutricrops, stated: “These new industrial assets are a global benchmark in customized fertilizer production and reflect our commitment to addressing global agricultural challenges while enabling sustainable growth opportunities for our partners.”
Beyond their industrial impact, the Mzinda and Meskala platforms are also contributing to the development of a comprehensive regional economic ecosystem, with a strong impact on local communities. In this regard, the SP2M program is working in collaboration with partners such as Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, INNOVX, and JESA to strengthen the local industrial ecosystem through national and international partnerships across sectors like green energy, circular economy, and Industry 5.0.
It also aims to generate tangible social and economic benefits by supporting local skill development and promoting sustainable practices to enhance the resilience of local social and economic structures.
Abdelghani Filali, Director of the SP2M platform, commented: “Through their strong social and economic impact, the Mzinda and Meskala projects embody the ambitious vision of the SP2M program and OCP Nutricrops. They aim to transform these regions into global competitiveness hubs while creating sustainable opportunities for local communities. This ambition is a core value integrated from the very beginning of the construction phase of these mining and industrial complexes.”
