Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, following discussions with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, stated that relations between Spain and Morocco are "the best in decades." Sánchez noted that the talks addressed several issues, most notably the management of migration flows.
In a post on his "X" account, Sánchez said: "It was a pleasure to meet the Prime Minister of Morocco, Aziz Akhannouch, once again. We discussed the excellent state of bilateral relations, which I consider to be the best in decades." He added that the two sides touched on the issue of managing migration flows, emphasizing the importance of organized and safe migration. They also discussed the organization of the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, expressing confidence that the event will be a great success.
From the Moroccan side, the Moroccan Press Agency reported that Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch held discussions with Sánchez, in the presence of the foreign ministers from both sides, Nasser Bourita and José Manuel Albares. The talks focused on strengthening relations between Rabat and Madrid, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.
This meeting marks the first between Akhannouch and Sánchez since their talks in Rabat last February, during a visit where they were received by King Mohammed VI. It also comes at a time when Rabat and Madrid are intensifying their security cooperation in combating irregular migration flows. Recently, Morocco played a key role in thwarting mass attempts to storm the occupied city of Ceuta, an effort that was praised by Spain.
