The Spanish daily AS praised on Saturday the major progress made by Morocco in terms of energy transition and sustainable development, stressing that the Kingdom has established itself as a “green transition leader in Africa”.
Morocco, now ranked 8th worldwide in the Climate Change Performance Index (IPCC), is “the first Arab and African country to occupy a privileged position in the Top 10 of this ranking”, which assesses countries' strategies in the fields of energy and climate, the Spanish newspaper writes.
“This great progress in ranking testifies to Morocco's commitment to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable development”, the issue points out in an article titled "Morocco revolutionizes the new global sustainability ranking."
Morocco ranks ahead of nations traditionally considered leaders in decarbonization, such as Germany (16th), Norway (9th), Sweden (11th) and Spain (19th), AS details, noting that the Kingdom has been rewarded for its efforts to increase the use of renewable energies, with the aim of reaching 52% of the energy mix from renewable sources by 2030.
The daily attributes this performance to Morocco's launch of several large-scale projects, including the Noor Ouarzazate solar complex, one of the world's largest solar projects, with an installed capacity of 580 MW; the Tarfaya wind farm, with a capacity of 301 MW, is one of Africa's largest wind farms; and the Noor Midelt solar project, with a planned total capacity of 1,600 MW.
As for green hydrogen, the Spanish newspaper continues, Morocco has benefited from its renewable energy resources to produce hydrogen sustainably, noting that this sector is growing rapidly and is set to play an important role in the country's energy future.
