US Consulate In Sydney Attacked With Hammer

The US consulate in Sydney, Australia was attacked with a hammer and sprayed with paint early Monday.

The New South Wales Police said that nine windows of the consulate were smashed and the front door was spray-painted with inverted red triangles around 3 a.m. local time (1700GMT Sunday), ABC News reported.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident, calling for "respectful political debate and discourse."

"People are traumatized by what is going on in the Middle East, particularly those with relatives in either Israel or in the Palestinian occupied territories," Albanese said at a press conference.

"Measures such as painting the US Consulate do nothing to advance the cause of those who have committed what is, of course, a crime to damage property," he stressed.

The police have launched an investigation to apprehend those responsible for the incident.
